Nigerian to be deported for entering Guyana illegally

A man was on Tuesday fined by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry for entering Guyana illegally.

Chizoba Paul Udemba, a Nigerian, who resides in Venezuela, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer to the charge of illegal entry into Guyana.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge, which stated that on November 17 at Charity, Essequibo, he entered Guyana by sea and failed to present himself to the nearest immigration officer.

Prosecutor Jairam Luckhai stated that on the day in question, ranks from the Anna Regina Police Station were conducting a road block exercise when they stopped and searched the car and its occupants. The defendant was questioned, and he told the police that he is a Nigerian national, so he was asked to produce the relevant documents. The defendant told the police that he was travelling from Venezuela to Suriname and did not have any documents; as a result, he was arrested and taken to the CID headquarters where he was charged.

The defendant stated that his pregnant wife is in Suriname and he was only trying to get to her, so he took a short-cut by travelling through Guyana. He added that when he arrived in Guyana, he paid someone a lot of money to get him over to Suriname.

The magistrate fined the defendant Gy$30,000; if he is unable to pay the fine he will spend three months in jail.

The defendant will remain in custody, while arrangements are being made for him to be deported.
